Healthcare Digital Signage Case Study | Interactive Patient Education Kiosks

Guiding Patients to the Right Healthcare Option

How L Squared helped Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care deploy bilingual interactive kiosks across 20 hospitals.

    Summary

Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care is the largest ministry in the provincial government and oversees healthcare funding and management across the province, including 146 public hospitals.

Research showed that some emergency room wait time challenges were connected to a lack of public awareness about available healthcare options. Many patients were going to emergency rooms for care that could potentially be provided through other accessible healthcare services.

The Ministry needed a public-facing communication tool that could educate patients, support bilingual access, work in healthcare environments, and meet accessibility requirements. The project also had to be completed within a tight timeline.

L Squared created and deployed an interactive kiosk system using the Ministry’s Healthcare Connect interface across 20 of Ontario’s busiest hospitals.

    Challenge & Solution

The Ministry needed a solution that could help patients better understand healthcare options before defaulting to emergency room care. The system needed to be easy to use, bilingual, accessible, durable, and appropriate for hospital environments.

L Squared designed an interactive kiosk experience using the Ministry Healthcare Connect GUI. The application helped educate users about available healthcare options through a simple, approachable interface.

In addition to software development, L Squared custom-designed and locally manufactured kiosks with antimicrobial surfaces to support healthcare environment requirements.

    The Technology

    The solution included:

    • Interactive healthcare kiosk system
    • Ministry Healthcare Connect GUI integration
    • Bilingual application experience
    • Accessible user interface design
    • Custom kiosk hardware
    • Locally manufactured kiosk units
    • Antimicrobial surfaces for healthcare settings
    • Deployment across 20 hospitals

    Implementation

The project was completed across 20 of Ontario’s busiest hospitals within four months. L Squared managed both the software experience and custom kiosk design, ensuring the solution was ready for public use in healthcare environments.

The kiosks were designed to educate patients in a clear, accessible, and bilingual format while supporting the Ministry’s broader communication goals.

    Impact

The Ministry gained an interactive communication tool that helped educate residents about healthcare options and supported better patient decision-making.

    The impact included:

    • Deployment across 20 high-traffic hospitals
    • Completion within four months
    • Bilingual patient education experience
    • Healthcare-appropriate kiosk design with antimicrobial surfaces
    • Improved access to information about care options
    • Recognition from the Government of Ontario for project success

By making healthcare information more visible and accessible, L Squared helped the Ministry support a more informed patient experience in busy hospital environments.
